For many people in the U.S. owning their own home is a dream. But the dream can easily become a nightmare due to a number of factors that wreak havoc on your piece of mind.
Upkeep and maintenance
When you own your own home, everything that breaks is your responsibility to fix. No calling the landlord to take care of things. You also have to mow, fertilize and water your lawn, trim your trees and scoop snow in the winter. Being responsible for all those things can ruin your peace of mind.
Though your home is a place to live, it’s also an investment for most people, one that they hope to see grow in value. When it doesn’t, that can be hard on your piece of mind. And there is a myth that one of the advantages of owning a home is that your payment never increases. While your principal and interest payment won’t increase if you have a fixed-rate mortgage, property taxes and insurance will go up often, sometimes on a yearly basis.
Needing to sell
If you need to move from your home, you have to get it sold, a process that can cost a lot of money and takes months even in best-case scenarios. There is little peace of mind in hoping to sell your home for the amount of money you need and in a time frame that works for you. When you rent, it is much easier to pick up and leave.
